Play focusing on fight against drug abuse attracts large audience across Turkey

At a time when the minimum age of a drug user is decreasing to worrying levels every passing year in Turkey, a play focusing on the fight against the abuse of drugs, particularly among the young people, has so far attracted a record number of audience across Turkey.

The play, named, “Beni Affet Anne” (Forgive Me, Mom), breaks audience records in every city it is performed. The theme of the play is the fight against the abuse of drugs in Turkey where the number of people who lose their lives due to use of harmful substances has increased more than 100 percent over the past years.

The one-act play has so far been performed in 50 cities where it has attracted an audience of 25,000. Eighty percent of the audience, approximately 20,000 people, who saw the play, are young people aged between 13 and 24.

Actors travelling from one city to another

At the end of each performance, which is also seen by the dignitaries in a city with great interest in addition to locals and young people, the actors are taken to districts from the city center for more performances. City officials tell the actors that they are better at explaining the young people the harmful effects of the drug abuse, so they take them to the other districts in the city so that they can perform the play for the people there. For instance, the actors who travelled to the southeastern Turkish province of Mardin in the last season, were only able to return to İstanbul after staging the play in Artuklu, Nusaybin, Kızıltepe, Derik, Mazıdağı, Ömerli and Yeşilli districts due to huge interest from the locals.

Famous names on stage against drug addiction

In the “Beni Affet Anne,” famous Turkish actor Kemal Denizci, who is known for his roles in many TV series such as “Kanatsız Kuşlar, Arka Sokaklar and Uçurum” as well as movies “Atçalı Kel Mehmet, Kanlı Postal and Ot,” plays the role of a father whose son is a drug addict.

Famous actor Onur Yenidünya, who is known with his roles in TV series such as “Yalan Dünya, Kuzey Güney, Huzur Sokağı” and the play named “Guguk Kuşu” in which he worked with popular Turkish actors, plays the roles of a young man, Hasan, who is a drug addict. Yenidünya is also the play’s scriptwriter and stage director.

The other actors in the play are Tuncay Kaynak, Yunus Emre Çolak and Erkan Ünal who are all known by their performances in several popular Turkish TV series.

Arts versus drug abuse

The idea about “arts versus drug abuse” came from journalist and writer Hüseyin Akkaş who was looking for a way for a more effective fight against the abuse of drugs among the young people. Akkaş tells the story of the project as follows:

“Due to the tragedies I faced while performing my job as a journalist, I decided to wage an effective war against drug abuse; however, I was not sure what kind of a method I should adopt to achieve this. Would I give a seminar on the issue of drug abuse, write a book about it or make interviews with people? I decided to attract people’s attention to this problem over a family tragedy without hurting young people. It occurred to me that I should make someone write a play with this theme which can be seen by the young people, as young as seven graders, together with their families. The goal of the play was to show to the young people how their families could fall apart, what they and their families should do if they had happened to suffer from drug abuse and what problems could emerge if they hide this from their father. We tried to tell the parents that extraordinary changes taking place in the lives of their children may be caused by drug abuse and show them what kind of steps they could take in such a situation,” said Akkaş.

‘Let’s become our child’s best friend’

Yenidünya, who talked about the writing process of the play, said he wrote it in one week in tears thinking of the people he knew who lost their lives due to drug abuse.

“I am also a father, I have two children. I and my friends set out to dissuade young people from beginning to take drugs. This play has a scenario which aims to raise awareness about drug addiction among young people and their parents before it is too late. This play gives the message of, “never get close to it,” to the subconscience of the people who have not used any drugs while it presents solutions to the people who are suffering from drug addiction.

We are telling our children what they should do before and after they become drug addicts and at the same time giving a message to the parents about what kind of measures they could take to prevent their children from becoming drug users.

For instance, if you notice that your child is taking drugs, you can resort to a drug addiction treatment center where the drugs in their bloodstream will be cleared away. However, it is very likely for your child to take drugs again when they face the slightest amount of stress or desperation. During this process, parents should spend time with their children together and do activities such as going to the cinema or playing billiards. Parents generally have a distant relationship with their children in the Turkish culture and avoid being friends with them. Instead of feeling regret in the future for failing to do this, let’s be friends, even best friends with our children. Those who will be remedy for our problems are the people with whom we share a house. Our children should not try to compensate for the lack of love at home elsewhere,” said Yenidünya.

Positive feedbacks

Yenidünya said the play is attracting much appreciation and positive feedbacks from its audience.

“Once, a mother in Bayburt province came to me, saying, ‘I have seen my sons in you, how I should behave them and what I should do [in case they begin to take drugs].’

In another city, a local politician told our director that he understood how much he neglected his children after seeing our play before rushing to his house to spend quality time with his children.

In a similar case, a police chief told me our play is giving a more effective message to the young people than the efforts of the law enforcement officials against drug use.

In another case, the deputy governor of a province said, ‘I was nearly crying while seeing the play,’ while the governor of the province said, ‘I have already cried, why have not you?’

Such feedbacks we get from people are very valuable and important for us.

Play to be performed in Hakkari for 5 days

The play, whose theatrical producer is the IQ Productions, will be performed in the eastern Turkish province of Hakkari for five days between Nov.26 and 30 thanks to the support of Hakkari Governor İdris Akbıyık and deputy mayor Cüneyt Epcim and at the initiative of Hakkari Provincial Director of Culture and Tourism İdris Ağacanoğlu.
